Our Research Focus

“The greatest discoveries are often hidden in data, unit science finds the story they tell.” John Tukey, 1962

  • From Prediction to Prevention –  algorithms to forecast disease risk and optimise interventions.

  • Explainable AI in Healthcare –  making AI outputs transparent and clinically useful.

  • Personal Care Pathways – tailoring treatment and lifestyle interventions for each patient.

  • Multi-modal Data Integration – combining lifestyle, blood biomarkers and genetics.

At the Service of Medicine

At Ambr Institute, our research team combines medical expertise with advanced AI to tackle some of the world’s most pressing health challenges. From early detection of dementia to personalized surgical recovery plans, our mission is to make precision medicine accessible, explainable, and effective for every patient.

We believe in healthy aging for all.

Our Scientific Principles

  • Grounding every decision, model, and recommendation in peer-reviewed scientific evidence and validated clinical data.

  • Minimizing bias in study design, data analysis, and interpretation to ensure results are accurate and trustworthy.

  • Partnering with multidisciplinary teams, clinicians, and global research experts to foster innovation and accelerate progress.

  • Upholding the highest standards in safeguarding patient privacy, dignity, and rights throughout all stages of research and development.

Currents Projects & Collaborations

  • Partners: University of Bergen, Haukeland University Hospital, Snefred Invest

Challenge: NECs are rare but aggressive cancers that are difficult to diagnose early.

Our approach: We integrate genetic sequencing, epigenetics, imaging, and metabolic data to improve diagnostic precision and guide treatment decisions.

Impact: Faster, more accurate diagnoses and better treatment stratification.

  • Partners: Bærum Hospital, Oslo University Hospital, and Tampere University (FI)

Challenge: Major abdominal surgeries carry a high risk of complications and reduced mobility, particularly in vulnerable patient groups. Surgeons need better tools to identify high-risk patients early and intervene before surgery to improve recovery outcomes.

Our approach: We aim to develop a surgical risk index and personalized prehabilitation programs for patients at high risk of complications.

Impact: This project aims to reduce post-operative complications, shorten hospital stays, improve quality of life after surgery, and lower healthcare costs.

  • Partners: Grossmann and Bud Center for Memory Care, University of Minnesota (led by Dr. Dongming Cai)

Challenge: Early signs of dementia often go undetected, especially in rural areas with limited specialist access, delaying prevention and treatment.

Our Approach: We are developing explainable AI algorithms to identify patients at risk or showing early indicators of dementia.

Impact: Earlier detection can improve prevention strategies, allow earlier interventions, and enhance patient outcomes, particularly in underserved communities.

  • Partners: Karolinska Institute, Tampere University, and a Nordic–Baltic research consortium

Challenge: Many AI algorithms in medical devices operate as “black boxes,” making their decisions hard for clinicians to interpret and trust.

Our Approach: We are collaborating to develop new methods that improve the transparency and interpretability of AI in medical devices, ensuring outputs are clear and clinically usable.

Impact: These explainable AI methods will be integrated into the Ambr platform, enhancing clinician trust, usability, and adoption of AI-assisted healthcare tools.
